The Intermountain Conference (IMC) teams already know our girls varsity soccer team will be the team to beat.

Returning from a 14-3-1 season, the squad aims to remain in a top spot in the IMC rankings.

“We could take state if we play our top game,” said defender Francy Grater.

Top scorer and last year’s most valuable player, Kristen Parr, has already racked up a total of 13 goals.

Junior Eve Hess, who earned first team all-league and second team all-state, returns for her third year on varsity.

“The past two years have been exciting,” said Hess. “We have a great team this year and I’m looking forward to play through the season.”

The team will look to Grater, second team all-state, for strong defensive play. Grater scored a goal against Bend High from inside the 18 off a pass from Parr during opening jamboree play Sept. 4.

Mid-fielder, Breanna Wilson, second team all-state, brings experience to the field as she plays her fourth and final season.

“I’ve had a lot of fun playing for Summit and I’m going to miss Jamie [Brock] and the rest of the players when I graduate,” says Wilson. “For now I’m going to play my hardest to make my last season my best.”

Adding to the team’s depth are forward Stacy Patterson, midfielder Emily Strome, and goalie Taylor Collinsworth, who has totalled five shutouts already.

During jamboree play, the girls beat Bend High for the first time in four years.

“It was a good start to the season and a good preview to see what’s to come,” said varsity coach Jamie Brock.

The Storm defeated the Roseburg Indians 5-1 after finishing the first half of the game scoreless. Parr scored four goals, the first off an assist from senior Bre Wilson.

The duo combined efforts just one minute later, with Parr scoring and Wilson assisting for a 2-0 lead.

Hess scored her first goal of the season in the 62nd minute off of an assist from Parr.

On Sept. 12 the team arrived late in Springfield to play Thurston on a short field in the heat and won 5-0. Hess scored in the first minute of the game, followed by three goals from Parr.  In the second half Wilson scored the final goal giving Summit a five-goal advantage.

The varsity squad defeated Ashland 8-0 Sept. 18. Wilson scored the only goal in the first half 30 minutes in on an assist from Hess.

Seven goals were scored after half time, with Kelsey Herrick beginning the action, assisted by Annie Hill. Stacey Patterson and Parr each scored two goals, with Strome and Holly Stormberg adding two.

“We just came out flat, like we weren’t quite awake yet,” said Coach Jamie Brock. “But we came out a whole different team right off the bat in the second half.”

Patterson and Hess scored three goals apiece during the 9-0 win over Crater Sept. 19. Parr added one goal and two assists.

The Storm remained scoreless 28 minutes into the game until Patterson scored off of a free kick from Lisa Caine.  Wilson and Hill also scored and Strome added an assist.

Summit hosted North Eugene Thursday, Sept. 24, winning easily 6-0.

Caine scored two goals off of assists from Strome. Other goals were scored by players Wilson, Parr, Rihanna Alyward and Tatum Randall.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, the squad hosted an OSAA endowment game against Class 6A Central Catholic, winning 5-1.

Wilson scored a goal in the first minute, followed by a goal from Parr in the 11th minute.

Grater scored the third goal with a header off of a corner from Hess. Then Central Catholic scored off their own corner 20 minutes in. Patterson and Hess scored the final two goals for their 5-1 win.

The Storm hosted Corvallis Oct. 2 and the Spartans gave the squad their first tie, 1-1.

The next day took the squad to Crescent Valley for another 1-1 tie. Hess scored the lone goal in the 35th minute off of an assist from Caine.

Opening IMC play began with an 11-0 win over Pendleton and a 5-0 shutout over Hermiston.

Herrick scored four goals in the game against the Bucks. Hess added two goals and two assists. Patterson added another two goals and Randall, Wilson and Grater all joined in on the scoring for the first IMC win.

Another shutout victory over Hermiston followed with Wilson, Hess, Herrick, Patterson and Davis all scoring.

Patterson served up two assists in the win, giving Summit an overall record of 8-0-2 before heading into play against Bend High.

The Oct. 13 game under the lights proved the determination of the Storm despite rain and cold temperatures. Parr headed in a free kick from Hess to take a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute.

The Bears scored a point 11 minutes after halftime to even up the game, but Wilson scored a minute later to give the Storm the lead. Bend scored the game-tying goal in the 58th minute off of a 40-yard kick, surprising both teams.

“I was excited to play Bend High. They have always been a competition to us but we have worked so hard and I knew we would put up a tough fight,” said Herrick. “We will see them again in playoffs, so we have another chance.”
