Although his enthusiasm for art does not appear to be bursting at the seams, his “calculated scribble” method is undoubtedly unique. Everyday during C Block, while students scramble to finish finals and rush to turn in worksheets, Ian Austin sits and works.  He designs intricate pieces such as the “canopy building”, made up from shooting lines that create a masterpiece of contrast.

“Ian is a self-motivated, hard worker who goes beyond the obvious.  Realism and graphic designs come very naturally,” said art teacher Meaghan Houska.  “I have a huge amount of confidence in him when he applies ideas to his work.”

Described as kind, creative, and artistically inclined we just had to take a closer look.

Q: “Do you plan on making a career out of your art?”

A:“Not really.”

Q: Tell us about your favorite creation and then describe the process you took to create it.

A:  It was a landscape of a building in a canopy.  The process consisted of a lot of sharpie which made really good contrast.  I didn’t really have a plan but it evolved as it went.

Q: Describe your style.

A: Calculated scribble.  I enjoy just drawing loosely and just creating a broad range of values.

Q: What is your favorite medium?

A: Sharpie!

Q: Where is your favorite place to create art?

A: Anywhere comfortable.

Q: What inspires your work?

A: Shapes that I can manipulate.

Q: Any plans for the future as far as art goes?

A: Not really.  I want to be an architect, but my art will play a big role in that.
